In 2000, Kansas artist Stan Herd painted this three-part mural for the Alva Mural Society. This “Castle Burning” mural tells the story of the fire that destroyed the Northwestern Territorial Normal School’s main campus in 1935. The building, known as Castle on the Hill, was originally designed by Guthrie architect John Foucart before it fell victim to the March 1 fire in Alva.
