Giant Statue of Chief Standing Brave
On display outside of the Woodshed of Big Cabin truck stop in northeastern Oklahoma, the Giant Statue of Chief Standing Brave was created by Wade Leslie. He began work on a scale model in the fall of 2000. The model now stands outside the Woodshed near the highway. After completing the model, Wade Leslie moved onto the full-scale statue that is made of steel pipe, rebar, wire mesh and expanding insulation foam. After carving the features into the foam, the statue was fiber-glassed and sanded. For the final stage, it was primed and painted giving it all of the wonderful details you can see from the road. It was finally completed in the spring of 2001. It was then moved and finally placed upright on August 9, 2001.
The statue is 46 feet tall, but with the base height added in, it stands at over 50 feet tall. It weighs over 15,000 pounds and took 801 hours to build. There are 105 feathers in Standing Brave's headdress that goes all the way to the ground and 37 feathers on his spear. The Oklahoma state flag was worked into the design of the shield.
