Pontotoc Ridge Preserve
Pontotoc Ridge Preserve
Located just south of Ada, the Pontotoc Ridge Preserve boasts 2,906 acres in the crosstimbers eco-region. Visitors to this unique area will see a mix of different habitats including mixed grass and tallgrass prairie, hardwood forest and savannah, as well as at least four caves and a few sinkholes. All traffic to the preserve is controlled to keep the area in its original state. No power lines or permanent roads have been built on the preserve in order to maintain this pristine area.
A variety of wildlife calls this south-central Oklahoma preserve home. Over 194 bird species, 100 species of butterflies, 60 species of dragonflies and 54 reptiles, including the Red-spotted toad, have been spotted at Pontotoc Ridge.
The Pontotoc Ridge Preserve, which is owned by The Nature Conservancy, is nestled in the foothills northest of the Arbuckle Mountains. Roughly two-thirds of the preserve is located in Pontotoc County, while the remainder crosses over into Johnson County. A limited number of guided tours are available to see this excellent example of Oklahoma's ruggedly beautiful landscape.
