Located in eastern Oklahoma, Okmulgee County was named for a Hitchita (Lower Creek) word meaning “boiling water.” In 1868, Okmulgee was selected as the capital of the Creek Nation. The St. Louis, Oklahoma and Southern Railway was the first railroad in the county, built in 1900. More railroads were built, and with the discovery of oil, the county grew and prospered.
The Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge is near Okmulgee and offers bird watching, trails, hunting and fishing. The Okmulgee & Dripping Springs Lake & Recreation Area offers campsites and fishing.
