The Outsiders House Museum
The Outsiders House Museum
In the early ‘80s, Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola came to Tulsa to catapult S. E. Hinton’s memorable characters from her best-selling novel, "The Outsiders," onto the big screen. The filmmaker and crew transformed an ordinary Tulsa neighborhood into a fully-functioning movie set. A cast of young, talented actors including Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio and Patrick Swayze arrived in town and in 1983, "The Outsiders" was released, quickly becoming an iconic movie of the decade.
A modest bungalow where the scrappy, close-knit Greasers lived, loved, fought and reconciled, sits as a tangible testament to the cinematic legend. The Outsiders House Museum has been painstakingly restored to reflect its appearance in the movie and contains one-of-a-kind exhibits, collections and memorabilia associated with the movie. Step inside the living room where Ponyboy and Darry quarreled, visit the kitchen and recall their chats about chocolate cake for breakfast, see rare and never-before-seen movie artifacts and more.
Walk on the ground where many great actors got their start and visit with the museum director and longtime fan of the novel and movie, Danny Boy O’Connor. In addition to this piece of cinematic history, a tour of other film sites including The Admiral Twin, Circle Cinema, the railroad bridge, Crutchfield Park (where the rumble was filmed) and Johnny Cade’s House, are available. Be sure to get a photo by the bent fence railing out front; rumor has it that Swayze bent it trying to do the flip over it on the way to the rumble. Enjoy this amazing piece of iconic American film history and "stay gold."
