Jackson County, located in southwestern Oklahoma, was named after President Andrew Jackson and Confederate General “Stonewall” Jackson. The county was created in 1907 at statehood, with Altus as the county seat. The Western Trail cattle route ran through the county in the 1870s, and three railroads were constructed in the early 1900s to serve the county. The Altus City Reservoir offers camping, fishing and picnic areas. Altus is also home to Altus Air Force Base, established in 1943.
