Alfalfa County is located in northwest Oklahoma. Formed in 1907, Alfalfa County was named after William “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, who was president of Oklahoma’s Constitutional Convention and later Oklahoma’s ninth governor. The Great Salt Plains are a unique part of the Alfalfa County landscape. At one time they were an attraction for indigenous peoples because of the abundant salt and wildlife resources. This is now a popular recreational area featuring a lake, national wildlife refuge and Salt Plains State Park. In the early 1900s, three railroads boosted the area economy: the Orient, Choctaw Northern and the Arkansas Valley and Western.
In 2000, census records showed 6,105 people living in Alfalfa County.
