Doaksville Candlelight Tour
Head to Fort Towson this fall for the annual Doaksville Candlelight Tour featuring a half-mile walk full of fascinating history. The tour will make stops at the headstones of notable, local people buried in the 180-year old Doaksville Cemetery.
Scholars and re-enactors stationed at the gravesites, dressed in historical clothing, bring the names on the headstones to life through storytelling. Biographies and histories of the tour span from early settlers to the Civil War and the War of 1812 veterans. This year's tour will feature stories from "The Choctaw Intelligencer," a local Doaksville newspaper from the nineteenth century. Visitors will learn about hot topics covered in the 1851 editions of the paper like local politics, a measles outbreak and John Franklin's lost expedition to the Arctic.
