Officially formed at statehood in 1907, Coal County was named for the coal mining industry that had supported the local economy since the 1870s. The county courthouse was built in 1909 in Coalgate, the county seat. Coal mining was historically the major industry in the area. In the early 1900s, with the demand for workers in the mines, Coal County’s population grew and the county thrived. The Coal County Historical & Mining Museum in Coalgate houses mining equipment, tools, photos and artifacts from the area. The Amish School Auction, Crafts & Antique Show is an annual event organized by Amish families in Coal County. Antiques, crafts, quilts, livestock and baked goods are some of the items available for purchase.
